Safety: What’s your impression of safety in Johannesburg, especially around Emperors Palace? “Yes, Lerise did remind me to take care of my belongings, but I never really felt unsafe. In fact, all my assumptions about Johannesburg have changed. I also visited Sandton and Nelson Mandela Square, and it was a great experience,” she shares. Madhuri’s positive experience challenges common misconceptions, making a strong case for Indian travelers to feel secure exploring the city with basic precautions.
Culture: How does South African culture compare to India? “Some aspects of South African culture feel similar to India, especially when it comes to food or shopping at Pick n Pay, where I noticed the same products under different brands. I was amazed to see the sense of equality among different classes of people, and I found everyone to be warm and happy,” Madhuri observes. She adds, “People here are very dedicated to their work, starting early and usually finishing by 5 PM, whereas in India we typically start around 10 AM and office hours can stretch anywhere between 7 to 9 PM. All in all, I didn’t miss the food from home at all,” Madhuri says. The first leg of her Grand Tour took her along the breathtaking Panorama Route to Kruger National Park, a drive that revealed South Africa’s stunning natural beauty. “We stopped at Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon, Lisbon Falls, and God’s Window,” Madhuri shares. “The route is often said to take 6–7 hours, but to truly soak in all the attractions, you need at least 10 hours. Start early—it’s worth it!” Her excitement peaked with her first-ever zipline at the Big Swing, describing it as “a much-needed dose of adrenaline to kick off the Grand Tour!”
Madhuri spent two nights in Hoedspruit, immersing herself in a full-day safari at Kruger National Park, a vastly different experience from Pilanesberg. “Kruger is vast,” she says. “We started at 5 a.m., reached the gate by 7 a.m., and set off in a comfortable open safari vehicle. The windy breeze and the wildness of Kruger, paired with a stunning sunrise, set the tone for an unforgettable day.” Her ranger, Warner, guided the group through the park, where they encountered a family of elephants, including a playful baby elephant that stole the show. “Everyone was quiet, just listening to the peace around us and watching those beautiful creations of God,” she recalls.
The safari was filled with remarkable moments. Madhuri spotted various bird species, grazing impalas, and a group of giraffes feeding up close. A highlight was a “beautiful traffic jam” caused by a family of ostriches with 14 chicks blocking the path. “The mother stopped and waited for a missing chick to rejoin before moving on—it was such a powerful moment of motherly instinct,” she says. Later, a radio tip led them to a majestic lion lounging under a tree, unbothered by a nearby impala. “Lions don’t kill out of greed, only need,” Madhuri learned, marveling at nature’s balance.

One of the highlights of my trip was facing my biggest fear — doing the Great Bloukrans Bungy Jump in Tsitsikamma! The entire experience was unforgettable. It began with getting strapped into the harness, a quick health check, and signing the indemnity form. I was scared yet excited at the same time. After taking a zipline to reach the jump point and waiting for my turn, I finally gathered all my courage and took the leap. Oh my God — I will never forget that moment! It was life-changing; I felt a powerful rush within me that I can’t put into words. During my time on the Garden Route, I also witnessed a breathtaking sunset at the Knysna Waterfront. Driving along the Garden Route was pure peace — every corner looked like a painting. Out of curiosity, I asked our tour guide why it’s called the “Garden Route.” He smiled and said, “Because this place stays green all year round and is believed to be God’s own garden.”
The route’s year-round verdure and serene drives offered a perfect counterpoint to Kruger’s intensity, recharging the soul before the vibrant finale in Cape Town. For Indian travelers, it’s an accessible add-on—safe, scenic, and brimming with adrenaline and calm in equal measure.

Visiting Cape Town was always my dream, and it truly felt like one when I finally arrived there. I absolutely loved the city — it’s fresh, vibrant, and full of life! Locals often say you can experience four seasons in one day in Cape Town, and I actually did! It was raining in the morning, and by noon, the sky had cleared up beautifully.
I did the Cape Peninsula Tour, and every stop was a treat to my eyes. Driving along the Atlantic Ocean and passing through Chapman’s Peak was magical — the wind, the view, the vibe — everything felt perfect. Standing at the southwestern tip of the African continent was a special moment. The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking, and seeing the penguin colony at Boulders Beach was so peaceful.
We even took a local train ride from Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. It felt unexpectedly safe and relaxing, with stunning coastal views along the way. I even dipped my feet in the Atlantic Ocean!

My friends and I took a picture there, reflecting on how important it is to remember that we are all human — beyond caste, color, and race.
