Nelson Mandela was born in the year 1918. Since this year will mark 100 years from the time of his birth, it provides people around the world, particularly those living in South Africa, with an opportunity to reflect on his life, his actions and to promote his legacy.
The Nelson Mandela foundation was established in 1999 with the aim of uplifting the young South African country, addressing its shortfalls, and driving it forward into its successful future.
The Foundation launched the ‘Nelson Mandela 100’ campaign in 2017, leading up to Nelson Mandela’s 100-year celebration. The campaign focuses on acting against poverty, implementing educational initiatives and promoting the legacy and memory of the great Nelson Mandela.
The Nelson Mandela centenary programme is currently the focal point of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. In order to raise funds for the campaign’s initiatives and activities, various fundraising events are taking place, such as; Bikers Day, the Trek4Mandela summit and the ABSA library launch.
A ‘day’ that everyone can support and get involved with, is ‘Mandela Day’. On the 18th of July 2018, South African’s (as well as the rest of the world) acknowledge their founder and remember what he stood for as a human being.
Society is encouraged to embrace Nelson Mandela’s words; “It is in your hands to make of the world a better place”. Embrace the Madiba spirit on the 18th of July, get involved and contribute to the upliftment of those around you.
