At the end of our tour we were treated to watching the sun set over the Mother City with uninterrupted views of Table Mountain and Signal Hill from the balcony of the elegant Penthouse Suite. From here we headed to the COPA Restaurant where we were treated to a delicious 3-course meal in this modern, stylish restaurant. The COPA Restaurant menu features locally-sourced ingredients and a range of tempting dishes to satisfy all palates, the food was so delicious choosing a favourite dish from the menu is tricky!

The Cango Caves are finest dripstone caverns, with vast halls and towering formations you will find. These caves are the only show caves in Africa that offer a choice of two different tour types, both lead by experienced, knowledgeable and accredited Caves Guides who will conduct visitors along the magic paths of the world’s finest stalactite cave. All tours are offered in English but Afrikaans, German, French and other language options may be available (these options can be checked when we make a reservation). The two tour types to choose from are either the Heritage Tour or the Adventure Tour. The Heritage Tour is an easy tour, departing every 60 minutes on the hour and is 60 minutes long. The Heritage Tour offers stops at several points of interest such as the Drum Room offering a translucent formation and Botha’s Hall which is completed by two columns soaring upwards to the ceiling. There are many interesting and facilitating formations, to be seen throughout this tour! The Drum Room 500 meters from the entrance point provides the first major turn-back point for this tour.

The Adventure Tour is for the real adventurous, this tour departs every 60 minutes on the half hour and is 90 minutes long. The Adventure Tour has the same starting point as the Heritage Tour but continues to lead deeper into the cave, where the Heritage Tour ends is where the Adventure Tour starts. Highlights of the Adventure Tour include (but are not limited to) the 85 meter long Lumbago Valley – with a low roof and for 28 meters the roof height seldom exceeds 1.2 meters, Devil’s Chimney – You will have to crawl through the Tunnel of Love passageway some 74 centimeters high, narrowing to about 30 centimeters at one point and Devil’s Kitchen which is a steep shaft about 45 centimeters wide which heads upwards for some 3,5 meters. After Devil’s Kitchen you will reach Devil’s Post Box, the only exit route, where you will have to use ‘Leopard Crawl’ to wriggle forward as you approach a low, wide slot that is only 27 centimeters high!

During the night, the sailors use the Pelican Point lighthouse as a guiding light to make their way back to shore. Pelican Point is also home to many animals including Cape Fur seals, Bottlenose and Heaviside's dolphins, black-backed jackals, as well as the brown hyena. Many times the seals are curious and playful and come up close to the kayaks.

Hermanus has recently had the honour of being named the top spot in the world out of 10 for whale-watching in the Telegraph’s world’s best whale-watching holidays for 2019. Hermanus is a quaint and beautifully scenic seaside town located a mere 90 minutes’ drive from Cape Town overlooking the Atlantic.

Whale watching in this area has become extremely popular, attracting local and international travellers every year. Some of the whales in Hermanus are Bryde’s whales, Humpback whales or Southern Right whales. The Southern Right whale is the most densely populated of all Hermanus whales that visit the area. Every year about 100 whales gather to breed in Hermanus during the months of June to December, with as many as close to 200 whales in Hermanus spotted at one time. This year whale season started early with the first whale spotted close to the New Harbour in Hermanus on the 30^th of April.

The first lot of whales normally start to arrive at the end of May, and every week more and more of these magnificent creatures arrive. Normally by September the full number of whales for the year are in Hermanus. If you are hoping to go whale watching in Hermanus, the peak whale season is September and October.

Over the past two decades, the population of lions have declined by nearly 43%, with much of the decline being the caused by human expansion and shrinking habitats. In South Africa, the infamous canned hunting industry has also led to a rapid decrease in Lions. The practice of canned hunting involves breeding and rearing lions for the sole purpose of being shot for sport in their enclosures. It is greatly reviled in the region and many organisations are working to end the practice.

Today there about 3000 wild lions in the country which has obviously had a big impact on the local ecosystem. This has not gone unnoticed and in an effort to reintroduce lions into an ecosystem that they have historically occurred,  Samara is providing a sanctuary for some of them. 

Their vision is to restore the Great Karoo to its former ecological glory by reintroducing free-roaming lions into the region, who will assume their role as predators, which will keep the local herbivore populations in check and thus help protect the indigenous vegetation from overgrazing. The lions are set to arrive in August 2018 and Sarah Tompkins, the founder of Samara, is truly excited for the event, stating:

We are delighted to be bringing lions back to our region. Their reintroduction gives us the opportunity to study what happens when a top predator returns to an ecosystem. Besides that, we can’t wait to hear their roars echoing through our valleys.
