World Rhino Day is celebrated annually on the 22^nd of September, a day where we can celebrate our favourite species and support their future. World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010 and in 2011 it grew into an international success, celebrating all five species of rhino: Black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos, all of which are under threat from the illegal rhino horn trade.

This special day brings together cause related organisations, rhino sanctuaries, NGOs and the public to celebrate rhinos in their own way. Activities for this day vary and there and there are several organisiations and initiatives that donors can choose to support. Some examples of activities include peaceful demonstrations, auctions to raise funds or a fundraising dinner. Some examples that teenagers could get involved with include classroom projects, poster displays and art contests.

Meerkats are small mammals of the Mongoose family with a Lemur-like face and four toes on each foot. A proudly South African carnivore the name is Afrikaans for ‘lake cat’. Meerkats are social creatures, like most South African locals, they live in groups of 20 – 30. Meerkats are well known for standing, they have a 25 – 35cm body when standing on their hind legs and use their tails to balance them in their famous pose. Meerkats are part of the Shy 5, which includes the bat-eared fox, porcupine, the aardvark and the aardwolf.

Visitors to Oudtshoorn can experience a wild habituated meerkat tour, they will have the privilege to get up close to these little creatures in the wild. This popular activity commences at sunrise and is dependent on fair weather, since meerkats will not venture outside their burrows on cold or rainy days. All tours last for 2 to 3 hours and booking in advance is essential. Guests can look forward to viewing meerkats as they come out their burrow into the sunshine and then go about their daily routine of foraging and frolicking. Namibia has 26 parks and reserves, the most famous of these parks is the Etosha National Park. Namibia’s endangered species include wild dog, black rhino, puku and oribi. There are 8 mammal species endemic to Namibia, including the Black faced Impala, several mice, gerbils and bats. The Namibian desert is well known for its large number of endemic dune dwellers, especially lizards, of which there are 30 endemic species.

The puku antelope is limited to about 100 individuals along the Chobe River in Botswana and the Linyati marshes in Namibia. The country also has the largest population in southern Africa of cheetah’s not contained within national parks. There are over also over twenty species of antelope ranging from the largest, the eland, to the smallest, the Damara dik-dik. Namibia s also home to a host of small mammals such as mongoose, jackal and the honey badger.

The African fish-eagle is the national bird of Namibia. You may see many birds on your travels through Namibia in a variety of habitats such as along floodplains, in grasslands or in reed beds. The birds of Namibia include ostrich, cranes, owls, bee-eaters and African warblers. These are just some of the 676 confirmed species of avifauna in Namibia, with Etosha National Park being home to an 340 bird species that make up an impressive mix that ranges from flamingos to the colourful lilac-breasted roller and eagles soaring high above.

Namibia has some of the most extraordinary vegetation, all adapted to harsh desert environments. Namibia lies in the second driest area in Africa after the Sahara, Namibia is the most arid country in sub-Saharan Africa, the landscape is characterised by deserts and mountains. Namibia can be split into four distinct vegetation zones. Together these four zones support over 4,000 seed bearing vascular plants, 120 different species of tree, over 200 endemic plant species and 100 varieties of lichen. The most well-known plant is actually one of the oldest in the world – the Welwitschia Mirabilis, you will find this interesting plant that lives in the sand dunes, rocky landscapes and coastal deserts surviving through severe droughts and windswept environment.  Some of the types of flora you will find in Namibia are trees, succulents, herbs and shrubs to name a few.

It is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and Southern Africa. It is Namibia’s prime wildlife location offering excellent game viewing. There is abundant wildlife that congregates around the numerous waterholes, which are floodlit at night, offering almost guaranteed game sightings.

Etosha means the ‘great white area‘ which refers to the dried salt pan in the middle of the park. The Etosha pan is the park’s most distinctive feature, it is even visible from space! It is believed to have been formed over 100 million years ago and is 130 km’s long and up to 50 km’s wide in certain places, meaning the pan covers almost a quarter of the park!

The park is malaria free and accessible by all vehicles, the rest camps at the park provide a variety of accommodation, restaurants, viewing points and decks, shops, petrol stations, luxurious camps in remote areas. The best places to see wildlife is at the waterholes scattered throughout the park, especially during the dry winters as most species rely on these permanent water sources. The larger waterholes see treks of zebra and springbok with a mix of Oryx and elephants. If you lucky you can spot rhino, elephant and lion drinking from the same waterhole!

Etosha is home to four of the Big 5, one of the best reasons to visit the park is to for the black rhino, the waterholes are some of the best places to see this precious animal. Elephants and lions are common but the elusive leopard hides in the densely vegetated areas. Other rare and endangered species include the black-faced impala and the fleet footed cheetah. Other large mammals include lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, hyena, sprinkbok, zebra, kudu, gemsbok and eland. The smaller species include jackal, bat-eared fox, warthog, honey badger, squirrels and more. The park is also home to 114 species of mammals.

The summers are ideal for birding in Etosha which is home to 340 bird species, about a third of which are migratory. One of the best birding spots is Fisher’s Pan, where you can see flamingos and storks wading through the shallow water. The bird life is made up of a mix from flamingos to the colourful lilac-breasted roller and eagles soaring high above. The vultures that visit the park include the lapped-faced, white-backed and hooded vultures.

The primary goal of the project comprises the Cheetah Breeding Project, in a secure but natural environment provided on Kuzuko’s game reserve. Kuzuko’s Reserve is host to a Breeding Section that is almost 600ha where captive-born cats are able to hunt, mate and give birth in the wild. The predator-free area allows for monitoring of adult animals and pregnant females as well as future offspring.

The proud mother was already pregnant when she arrived and was the second female to make her way to Kuzuko, she one of three adult females who will be kicking off the Cheetah Breeding Project. Originally a captive-born cheetah, her introduction to the reserve began in a holding boma, after which she was released into the breeding area where she was soon successfully hunting.

The mother gave birth to a male and two females who will remain with their mother to mature in the protected wild area and learn to hunt on their own. Once old enough to fend for themselves, they will enter the Cheetah Metapopulation Project that will identify suitable game reserves for the offspring born at Kuzuko.

‘We are delighted to have reached this major milestone, in that the first litter of cubs have successfully been born into the project. The eventual introduction of these cubs, once they reach maturity, into the Cheetah Metapopulation Project will complete the cycle that we originally intended – for captive-bred cheetahs and their offspring to make a significant contribution to the conservation plight of this endangered species,’ states Chantal Rischard from Ashia.

Gerhard de Lange from Kuzuko adds: ‘The female and her cubs are doing phenomenally well; the cubs are growing daily under their mom’s attentive care. It has been an amazing experience to witness how remarkably well these cats are adjusting to their new home in the wild.’

About Ashia Cheetah Conservation
Ashia Cheetah Conservation is a registered non-profit company that was set up by Ashia cheetah sanctuary outside Paarl in the Western Cape to manage and finance the Cheetah Release Program. Ashia’s goal is to help prevent the further decline of cheetah populations and increase the genetic gene pool through captive breeding programs. Captive-born cheetahs will be released into the protected wild of selected Private Game Reserves in South Africa. The relatedness of the reserve populations has become an issue and preventing inbreeding without supplementation from outside populations will be practically impossible. Given the limited numbers in the wild, the release of captive-born cheetahs from scientific breeding programs with strict DNA testing and accurate (Studbook) records on origin and parentage is a promising way to respond to the urgent need of reintroducing new genes to strengthen the wild populations.

The Hwange National Park situated in West Zimbabwe is Zimbabwe’s biggest and most diverse national park. The elephant stronghold of Hwange is a game-rich area roughly the size of the Bahamas.
