– The Skeleton Coast: Reaching all the way from Swakopmund to the Angolan border, the Skeleton Coast derives its macabre name from the shipwrecks and whale bones that litter its desolate shore. However, despite the region’s inhospitable nature, its stark scenery is among the most beautiful on Earth. This town was once home to amenities and institutions including a hospital, ballroom, school, casino as well as the first tram in Africa. The town declined when the diamond-field slowly exhausted and was ultimately abandoned in 1954. The forces of the desert mean that tourists now walk through houses knee-deep in sand, this is also an area popular for photographers.

– Twyfelfontein: Located in North-western Namibia, this area contains one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa. Most of these carvings were created more than 6,000 years ago by ancient Bushmen. The carvings were made by cutting through the hard surface layer of sandstone and represent animals such as rhinos, elephants and ostriches as well as depictions of human and animal footprints.

– Etosha National Park: Located in the north of the country this spectacular wildlife park is dominated by a massive mineral pan, part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed over 1,000 million years ago and fills up only for a short period of time when rains are heavy. Etosha National Park is Namibia’s top wildlife destination. It is one of the best places in the world to spot endangered white and black rhinos, while other bucket list animals include lions, cheetah, elephant and leopard. It’s also a great place for birding, with 340 different avian species. Traditionally, Etosha is a self-drive destination, giving visitors the freedom to explore at will. There are several accommodation options within the park, including three main camps each with their own floodlit waterhole. Game-viewing at Etosha is best during the dry season from June to September.

– Sossusvlei: The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world, and at its heart lies the Sossusvlei dune sea. This enormous clay pan surrounded by gigantic, red sand dunes. Here, mighty sand dunes dominate the terrain, dotted occasionally by unusual plants that survive despite the harsh and unyielding desert-like conditions. During sunrise and sunset, the colours of the sand dunes are constantly changing and provide an opportunity for photographers. The fierce desert winds continually alter the shape and texture of the dunes, providing an ever-changing desert landscape.

– Fish River Canyon: This is Africa’s largest canyon, second only in size to America’s Grand Canyon. Located in the south of the country, it is thought to have formed around 500 million years ago. The Fish River Canyon is absolutely magnificent and breath-taking in its immensity. The canyon features a gigantic ravine, in total about 160km (100 miles) long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.

– Caprivi Strip: An isolated finger jutting eastward from Namibia’s northeast corner, the Caprivi Strip is entirely different from the rest of the country. Fed by the mighty Kavango, Chobe, Zambezi and Cuando rivers, the Caprivi is the wettest region in Namibia home to a green oasis known for its lush vegetation and abundant wildlife. The riverbanks are home to a selection of accommodation options, ranging from backpacker hostels to luxury waterfront chalets. The best way to experience the region is from the water, on a houseboat or sundowner cruise. There are several excellent game reserves in the Caprivi region and the birdlife is a particular good, with over 425 bird species recorded in this region.

– Swakopmund: Pretty as a picture, the scenic seaside town of Swakopmund breathes fresh salty air into the dry desert landscape. It is a popular stopover for visitors to Namibia and the quaint and pretty town offers plenty in terms of sights, places to eat and things to do. The nearby sand dunes provide several activities such as sandboarding, horse riding and quad biking while the beaches of Swakopmund provide plenty of surf and sand. At nearby Walvis Bay, vast flocks of flamingos can be seen grazing in the algae-filled shallows.

– Damaraland: One of the most scenic areas of Namibia is Damaraland, a huge, untamed region. Namibia’s northwest Damaraland region is arid, rocky and very sparsely populated. Its towering hills glow red in the early morning and late afternoon, and at night, the stars blaze in a sky unpolluted by human habitation. This is the traditional home of the Himba, a nomadic pastoralist tribe who have survived in this harsh environment for thousands of years. In the most remote villages, their way of life remains largely unchanged. The Himba women are famous for their ornate hairstyles, and for the blend of butter fat and ocher with which they paste their naked torsos.

The Herero tribe also known as Ovaherero are traditionally pastoralists and have homesteads in various parts of Namibia, mostly the eastern, central and the north-eastern areas of the country. The people apart of this tribe speak Otjiherero a language and there are about 211 700 that speak it. The Herero people today are known for their modernised fashion that was heavily influenced by the Germans during the colonial period. The Herero men wear military style outfits and the Herero women adopted floor length gowns from that time but have added vivid colours and patterns that are a true representative of the people. These dresses can incorporate up to 10 metres of fabric and the most distinctive feature of the women’s dress is their horizontal horned headdress, the otjikaiva, which is a symbol of respect, worn to pay respect to the cows that have sustained the Herero. The Herero people have a mix of modernised ways but still stick closely to their traditions. Having your clients take a visit to see the Herero people is not only a once in a life time experience but also a very rewarding one as they will have the opportunity to see first-hand their unique way of life.

Another are the Himba tribe who are semi-nomadic indigenous people that can be found living in the Kaokoland Region in Northern Namibia. The tribe speak OtjiHimba (which is a variation of Herero). The Herero and Himba people were originally one tribe before separation due to a drought that occurred in the area thus they have a few similarities but due to the need for adaption there are now more differences between them. Unlike the Herero the Himba men and women both wear traditional outfits made of calfskin and are easily identified due to their hair and skin being a distinct red/orange colour characteristics due to the otjize paste, a cosmetic mixture of butterfat and ochre pigment, to cleanse the skin over long periods due to water scarcity and protect themselves from the extremely hot and dry climate of the Kaokoland as well as against mosquito insect bites. The Himba people have become a well-known image of South Africa due to their distinct traditional ways. These people have a traditional approach to life and will allow your clients to see how they have used their natural environment necessary adaption.

The San also known as Bushmen are a part of various indigenous hunter gathers and are widely spread across Southern Africa. The San speak a variety of languages including all languages of the Khoe, Kx’a, and Tuu language families. Traditionally the San’s way of life and their levels of authority was an egalitarian society they had hereditary chiefs but their authority was limited. The San made decisions among themselves by consensus with women being highly respected and treated as equals. San economy was a gift economy, based on giving each other gifts regularly rather than on trading or purchasing goods and services. Due to their difficult and unpredictable environment they have adopted by using what is around them in order to sustain their life styles. The San are mainly known for their rock art and engravings that are scattered across Southern Africa and these act as a story teller that gives us insight into their past ways of life. Sossusvlei is a clay pan that is covered with sand that is rich in salt making the area white in appearance. The dunes surrounding this is area nearly reach 400m high some of the highest in the world. One way of viewing this spectacular destination as well as its surroundings is via a hot air balloon which provides a thrilling adventure over a rare view.  

Another clay pan just out of Sossusvlei is Deadvlei which means “dead marsh” in English, this area is covered with skeletons of dead trees that are nearly 900 years old due to a period of drought that hit the area leaving it as forest frozen in time. This area serves as a photographic haven due to the stunning contrasts between the blue sky, white ground, black trees and the red sand dunes surrounding. 

Some the iconic dunes in the areas surrounding Sossusvlei include Dune 45 and Big Daddy. Dune 45 due to its fascinating shape and accessibility makes it one of the most photographed dunes in the world. This dune was named Dune 45 as it is situated 45km from Sesrium Gate which is the main access point to the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the sand making up this dune is nearly 5 million years old. Visitors are allowed to climb this dune that is 85m high, so be sure to arrive early to experience the sunrise over the Sossusvlei area. Big Daddy is situated past Sossusvlei near Deadvlei. Big Daddy just like Dune 45 can also be climbed but it is a much more strenuous climb due to its height, the dune itself is 325m making it one of the highest dunes in the Sossusvlei area and provides spectacular views of the Deadvlei area.

Another must see in this area is the Sesrium Canyon which has been shaped over millions of years by the Tsauchab River and is about 1m long and 30m deep. The canyon is situated 4.5km from the Namibia-Naukluft National Park and is one of the few places in the Sossusvlei that holds water throughout the year.

Namibia has 26 parks and reserves, the most famous of these parks is the Etosha National Park. Namibia’s endangered species include wild dog, black rhino, puku and oribi. There are 8 mammal species endemic to Namibia, including the Black faced Impala, several mice, gerbils and bats. The Namibian desert is well known for its large number of endemic dune dwellers, especially lizards, of which there are 30 endemic species.

The puku antelope is limited to about 100 individuals along the Chobe River in Botswana and the Linyati marshes in Namibia. The country also has the largest population in southern Africa of cheetah’s not contained within national parks. There are over also over twenty species of antelope ranging from the largest, the eland, to the smallest, the Damara dik-dik. Namibia s also home to a host of small mammals such as mongoose, jackal and the honey badger.

The African fish-eagle is the national bird of Namibia. You may see many birds on your travels through Namibia in a variety of habitats such as along floodplains, in grasslands or in reed beds. The birds of Namibia include ostrich, cranes, owls, bee-eaters and African warblers. These are just some of the 676 confirmed species of avifauna in Namibia, with Etosha National Park being home to an 340 bird species that make up an impressive mix that ranges from flamingos to the colourful lilac-breasted roller and eagles soaring high above.

Namibia has some of the most extraordinary vegetation, all adapted to harsh desert environments. Namibia lies in the second driest area in Africa after the Sahara, Namibia is the most arid country in sub-Saharan Africa, the landscape is characterised by deserts and mountains. Namibia can be split into four distinct vegetation zones. Together these four zones support over 4,000 seed bearing vascular plants, 120 different species of tree, over 200 endemic plant species and 100 varieties of lichen. The most well-known plant is actually one of the oldest in the world – the Welwitschia Mirabilis, you will find this interesting plant that lives in the sand dunes, rocky landscapes and coastal deserts surviving through severe droughts and windswept environment.  Some of the types of flora you will find in Namibia are trees, succulents, herbs and shrubs to name a few.

It is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and Southern Africa. It is Namibia’s prime wildlife location offering excellent game viewing. There is abundant wildlife that congregates around the numerous waterholes, which are floodlit at night, offering almost guaranteed game sightings.

Etosha means the ‘great white area‘ which refers to the dried salt pan in the middle of the park. The Etosha pan is the park’s most distinctive feature, it is even visible from space! It is believed to have been formed over 100 million years ago and is 130 km’s long and up to 50 km’s wide in certain places, meaning the pan covers almost a quarter of the park!

The park is malaria free and accessible by all vehicles, the rest camps at the park provide a variety of accommodation, restaurants, viewing points and decks, shops, petrol stations, luxurious camps in remote areas. The best places to see wildlife is at the waterholes scattered throughout the park, especially during the dry winters as most species rely on these permanent water sources. The larger waterholes see treks of zebra and springbok with a mix of Oryx and elephants. If you lucky you can spot rhino, elephant and lion drinking from the same waterhole!

Etosha is home to four of the Big 5, one of the best reasons to visit the park is to for the black rhino, the waterholes are some of the best places to see this precious animal. Elephants and lions are common but the elusive leopard hides in the densely vegetated areas. Other rare and endangered species include the black-faced impala and the fleet footed cheetah. Other large mammals include lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, hyena, sprinkbok, zebra, kudu, gemsbok and eland. The smaller species include jackal, bat-eared fox, warthog, honey badger, squirrels and more. The park is also home to 114 species of mammals.

The summers are ideal for birding in Etosha which is home to 340 bird species, about a third of which are migratory. One of the best birding spots is Fisher’s Pan, where you can see flamingos and storks wading through the shallow water. The bird life is made up of a mix from flamingos to the colourful lilac-breasted roller and eagles soaring high above. The vultures that visit the park include the lapped-faced, white-backed and hooded vultures.
